Hydropower is a leading source of electricity in Canada. NSERC HydroNet is a national research network aimed at promoting sustainable hydropower and healthy aquatic ecosystems in Canada. The general objectives of the network are to increase our understanding and develop new tools to better assess, minimize, and mitigate the effects of hydropower on fish and their habitats.

NSERC HydroNet is supported by the NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada) to develop the partnerships to strengthen the scientific basis of decisions regarding hydropower generation effects on the environment .

NSERC HydroNet involves 18 academic scientists, 30 graduate students and Post Docs researchers and a strong partnership with Fisheries and Oceans HydroNet Canada (5 scientists) and 2 major hydroelectric companies (Manitoba Hydro, and BC Hydro).  Its research program is organized around two research themes of broad national importance.
